I can see where these elements would make the networking event more effective for folks - but I still shy away from these things. I'm an introvert, despite what many of my acquaintances think. I remember one guy who eagerly introduced himself to me at a conference networking happy hour. Truly flattering. Until I told him my title - which was not "Executive Director," "Vice President," or "Chief of All Important Hiring Decisions." He couldn't get away from me fast enough. I don't know what would motivate me to attend an alumni or professional association networking event. Perhaps gunpoint? I prefer to meet people through introductions from trusted colleagues, then have meaningful 1:1s with them.

I treasure meeting people individually too. I agree how unflattering to have that experience. It would turn me off as well.
