This was interesting to me: "It’s been reported that he got into hot water with other US Presidents of both parties when he chose to travel and interact diplomatically on the world stage, being an example of humanitarian behavior he was not seeing demonstrated by other administrations."
I think there is a fine line between respecting people in authority and power and "stepping into the gap" because there is a clear need, yet Carter wasn't afraid of how he would be judged. It's dangerous business though when other people are territorial and their egos are in play and you want to be helpful.
